New International Version

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.56 Then he and his disciples went to another village

For Reflection

Once united, the northern tribes and the southern tribes had a falling out over their respective lifestyles. They regarded each other with mutual avarice.  The Samaritans of this town regarded Jesus as the would any Jew of the Southern tribes. Jesus was not disturbed by their rejection. When he was advised to punish the Samaritans for their insults, Jesus rejected their vindictiveness and turned the other cheek. Resisting retribution, Jesus just went to the next town.

Pray

Pray so that you quell your instinct for retribution. Pray that your faith will not be threatened by the faces of rejection you encounter.
