Jeremiah: The Suffering Preacher of Doom

Jeremiah 38:24-28
New International Version

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die. 25 If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’ 26 then tell them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house to die there.’”

27 All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.

28 And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.

For Reflection

Sometimes it's not so good to be King. Did Zedekiah have second thoughts, and was he considering surrendering to the Caldeens to save his people? Or did he want to hear Jeremiah say that he could ignore God's will and all would work out?  To be sure, as shown by those who watched his every move, he was under a lot of pressure to stay the course.

And consider Jeremiah's grace in agreeing to misdirect the reason for meeting the King. Such Grace ensured that Jeremiah would not die at the hand of the King.

Pray

Pray and contemplate the weak and vacillating leaders who ignore the will of God and plunge their nations deeper and deeper into the abyss.  The political affairs of the world are full of catastrophic examples.
