Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Since then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.
For Reflection
In the time of Jesus, the Jewish monotheistic faith was much more than a religion. The temple was the center of the Jewish faith, culture, socioeconomic structure, and governance. The priestly classes became corrupted and the Roman occupation's use of the spiritual leaders as civic intermediaries gave additional power. Jesus rarely criticized the Hebrews. He often criticized the Pharisees, however, for forgetting God in their self-aggrandizing abuse of power.
The Jewish people needed a new image of the essence of the priesthood. Jesus stood in sharp contrast to the way the Hebrew faith was ministered. He has shown us that the application of the Mosiac Law and attempting to legalize spiritual matters required the temperance of compassion and love.
The Christ Event morphed into the Jewish Jesus Movement after the resurrection. Jews and non-Jews who accepted this new way to be Jewish came into the group with their unique backgrounds and expectancies. Each struggled to reorder, understand, and internalize these new spiritual attitudes, beliefs, and values.
Pray
Pray, thanking God for the gift of his mirroring image, Jesus. Contemplate the life of Jesus and let God, in the manner of Jesus, pilot you in your daily living.
