No Wise Person among You?

Lawsuits Among Believers

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!

For Reflection

We live in a litigious society.  "If my attorney, Bernie, says, 'Sue!" I sue."* The Scripture warns of taking trivial matters to civil judges. Today, such issues clog the courts with suits and countersuits. So we ask again, "Is there no one wise enough to settle the matter justly?"

If you harm me and I sue you, what have we done to the relationships, however distant, upon which a disciplined society depends? The one who feels he or she has been treated unjustly should approach the other with the intention of honoring him or her with respect and deliberation that leads to reconciliation.  That is the Kingdom way.

Pray

Pray for the peacemakers. Pray that you will have the courage to address those whom you think have harmed you in love, kindness, respect, and an attitude of reconciliation.
