Two Kinds of Wisdom

Matthew 5:33-37
New Revised Standard Version

Concerning Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.[a]

For Reflection

At an early age, I was told to be truthful. Throughout my formative years, I was perhaps punished more for lying than for any other transgression. Now, as an adult I find my self in a culture where the truth is at best optional.

The greatest challenge of these times is to figure out how to live in a chaotic society of untrust. How does one judge wisely when one suspects everyone of spurious intent.

Pray

Pray and listen to God's recommendations, remembering the roots of your faith are love, justice, and kindness.  Pray so that you will trust in the promise that all will be used for the good of God's kingdom. Pray and find peace and comfort as you rest leaning on the everlasting Lord.
