Love Divine

1 Samuel 30:21-25
New International Version

21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22 But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, “Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.”

23 David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24 Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.” 25 David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.

For Reflection

"It's not fair," they cried. How many times have you seen that response to a righteous solution?  Perhaps you read it in the parable of the prodigal son when the father throws a lavish party for his wayward son; his brother cries, "It's not fair!" Or maybe you heard the parable of the Laborers in the Field who called, "It's not fair," when some struggled all day for their wage, and they who worked only a few hours were paid the same.

There are always those who, out of selfishness, will object to an action that reflects the justice of righteous decisions. "It's not fair," they cry at increasing the minimum wage or paying taxes to support schools when they have no children attending.  Many times those who object have lost a sense of the common good.  David calls those who were too exhausted to fight members of a family.  He further says that their task of keeping safe the tools of the battle was just as valuable as those who engaged the enemy.

That's what we are, a worldwide family. What affects one of us, good or bad, affects us all. God's divine love is shared equally for the good of us all. God is generous.
