The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

For Reflection

Maybe Jesus and his group were passing a vineyard. Jesus, looking upon the workers attending to the early needs of a productive harvest by moonlight, saw a metaphor of the relationship between the Father, Himself, and the stewardship of his followers. Perhaps it was the vine tendrils painted on the walls where they had eaten supper or carved on the door. However it moved Jesus to speak; he described the love of the father for the faithful. He described how God nurtures the maturation of faith. It was and is a beautiful description of the living union between Christ and those who believe in him.
