In What Do You Place Trust?

Love for One Another

Godly Love Among Believers
Live in the light of God (Isaiah 2:5)

Confident Love

Galatians 3:6-14 New International Version (NIV)

6 So also, Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[a]

7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[b] 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[c] 11 Clearly, no one who relies on the law is justified before God because “the righteous will live by faith.”[d]12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”[e] 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”[f] 14 He redeemed us so that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus so that by faith, we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

For Reflection

Jesus was given to solve the problem of the Law.  Since the time Moses delivered the Commandments, the Jews struggled to define the lawful practices.  As a result, they ended up with hundreds of interpretative manifestations of the Mosaic law.  There were so many restricting and conflicting laws that there was little hope one could find a righteous life by following them. Over time, the law was used maliciously, thus, weaponized by those seeking power. The Mosaic law became an impediment for practicing a life faithful to God, and impossible for a Gentile to participate. No one could sustain a relationship with God by becoming obedient to such a moral program.

The faith practices became a more important path to righteousness than the faith that initiated it. Rule keeping perpetuated more rule-keeping, which did not evolve into living by faith. Doing things for God is quite the opposite of entering into what God is doing for you.

Because of the Christ event, all can receive God's life and God's spirit by believing, as did Abraham. The Mosaic covenant is still the basis of faith in action. The law, however, is tempered by the mercy and compassionate applications as revealed by Jesus.

Pray

Pray so that you will find the wisdom to practice your faith humbly, apply the rules wisely, and be merciful. Pray so that you can give up the "holy gotcha" and embrace the practices of the "holy healer."
