Matthew 2:19-23 New International Version

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

For Reflection

God has a history of communicating directly with God's people, particularly through Angels. Up to this point, angels were chief ministers. Angels now usher in a new era, one lead by the son of God.

God watches for the safety of Joseph, Mary, and the child. Through God's ministers, the Angels, God warns them of the imminent threat. The same divine providence which saved Israel by commanding them to flee, the Holy Family was also sent into Egypt, a foreign land, before returning to Nazareth.

Joseph had a choice to make. Stay put and risk the child's life or flee on a dangerous journey into an unknown land. In faithful obedience to God, Joseph and Mary undertook the journey which God appointed for their preservation.

Pray

Pray, so you will heed God's call despite the risk in which your obedience may result. Pray so that you shall trust God unconditionally.
