Lydia: Called to Serve

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
New International Version

2 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[a] 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

For Reflection

When asked what a preacher of the word should do if he were not eloquent, Saint Augustine advised to just read the Gospel. Its eloquence is self-evident.  Fred Craddock remarks that the sermon is a means by which God will speak to the listener.

Thinking that one needs to be a superior speaker to bear witness to the Cross assumes a notion of self-importance.  All God asks of us is that we are obedient to the Word and that we use our lives as a demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit.

Pray

Pray, and allow the love of God to drive and animated you through the Holy Spirit that resides within you.
