Lydia: Called to Serve

1 Peter 4:7-11
The Message

7-11 Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!

For Reflection

Our time on Earth is not infinite. Our last breath in this world is never far off.  Our recent Covid experiences reveal just how unpredictable our life spans can be.  Without question, we will depart this world for whatever exists in our lives after death.

There is also no doubt (in my mind at least) that living in a loving, caring, hospitable society is a whole lot better than many alternatives. I know it is difficult to be optimistic and cheerful when one feels more like crying, generous when one thinks one has little to share, or inclusive when others scream for exceptionalism.

Asking God to comfort and reassure you is not a Pollyannaic request.  Of course, if asked, God will give you peace that passes all expectations.

Pray

Pray, so you can have radical trust in the LORD.  Pray and face the most hopeless circumstances with hope.  Pray and witness to the power of Christ.
