The Miracle of Listening

Call in the New Testament

Jesus and His Calls in Ministry
Live in the light of God (Isaiah 2:5)

Called to Evangelize

John 1:37-42
The Message

37-38 The two disciples heard him and went after Jesus. Jesus looked over his shoulder and said to them, “What are you after?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 He replied, “Come along and see for yourself.”

They came, saw where he was living, and ended up staying with him for the day. It was late afternoon when this happened.

40-42 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s witness and followed Jesus. The first thing he did after finding where Jesus lived was find his own brother, Simon, telling him, “We’ve found the Messiah” (that is, “Christ”). He immediately led him to Jesus.

Jesus took one look up and said, “You’re John’s son, Simon? From now on, your name is Cephas” (or Peter, which means “Rock”).

For Reflection

The CALL is an ask.  Many heard Jesus' words. Some dismissed them as nonsense. Others heard the words and believed. Still, others heard, believed, and acted upon the words of Christ. Andrew heard and listened, and then he extended a call to his brother Simon. Simon, who was renamed Peter, was called to be the foundation of the church.  Peter received instructions from Christ and now, after over 2000 years, he instructs us.

Pray

Pray so that you will not only hear the word but answer its call.  As his call transformed Peter, it shall also transform you, and you will be renamed in Christ.
