The Message

In a Light-Radiant Cloud

2-4 Six days later, three of them did see it. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. His clothes shimmered, glistening white, whiter than any bleach could make them. Elijah, along with Moses, came into view in deep conversation with Jesus.

5-6 Peter interrupted, “Rabbi, this is a great moment! Let’s build three memorials—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.” He blurted this out without thinking, stunned as they all were by what they were seeing.

7 Just then, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and from deep in the cloud, a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to him.”

8 The next minute, the disciples were looking around, rubbing their eyes, seeing nothing but Jesus, only Jesus.

For Reflection

Moses and Elijah were the most revered figures until Jesus.  Peter, James, and John accompanied Jesus to the mountain.  There they witnessed the true identity of Jesus. But they understood this radiant figure of Christ in the only way they were able, in the image of Moses and Elijah.

Often our human perception of reality is limited by our experience.  The three disciples were no different. None had ever seen such a transfiguration.  They had no experience by which they could understand the mystery that stood before them. Having assumed that Jesus was a prophet, God set them straight. "Listen to him, my son," God instructed. It then became clear to the three that saw first hand and to all of us that have been told that this figure was not to be compared equally to the revered prophets. This Jesus was the Christ, the expected Messiah.
