Elijah: Prophet of Courage

Mark 9:9-13
The Message

9-10 Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. “Don’t tell a soul what you saw. After the Son of Man rises from the dead, you’re free to talk.” They puzzled over that, wondering what on earth “rising from the dead” meant.

11 Meanwhile, they were asking, “Why do the religion scholars say that Elijah has to come first?”

12-13 Jesus replied, “Elijah does come first and get everything ready for the coming of the Son of Man. They treated this Elijah like dirt, much like they will treat the Son of Man, who will, according to Scripture, suffer terribly and be kicked around contemptibly.”

For Reflection

Most people focus on identifying John the Baptist as a "new Elijah." Elijah may be used as a substitute or metaphor for all the divinely inspired figures that paved the way for the Christ event.  Like Elijah and many other prophets, Jesus will be maltreated for truth-telling to power.

More significantly, the one comment that the three disciples dismissed was the reference to death and resurrection.  Can you imagine how confusing that comment would seem to those who recognized the power of Jesus? Many may have expected Jesus to live forever in human form to fight their causes.  They fail to envision the greatest miracle yet to follow, the resurrection and the eternal presence of Christ.

Pray

Pray about all things. Pray that your faith in the mystery of our Savior will invade your every thought, desire, expectation, wish, and action.  Pray to achieve atonement with the risen Christ.
