Jonah: Fiery Harbinger of Doom

New International Version

The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

For Reflection

The Jewish religious leaders accused Jesus of summoning Satan when he drove the demons out of the person they had inhabited. They asked him to perform a sign from heaven that would prove his divine right to heal. They had no interest in understanding or accepting Jesus. They only wanted to discredit him.

But signs are granted only to those who desire to confirm their faith. Signs are denied to those who wanted only to excuse their unbelief. Jesus foreshadows the ultimate sign of his divinity, his death and resurrection. Those who cannot accept Jesus' resurrection whisk it away as one would an annoying dust bunny. Others accept the truth of the resurrection as a sign of God's love and are transformed by it.

Pray

Pray and let God drive you toward a deeper reverence for God's sovereignty. Pray and live under the sign of God's love. Pray and be humbled by God's power.
