Confident HopeJesus Teaches about Hope Live in the light of God (Isaiah 2:5) Why Do You Worry?1 Timothy 6:17-19 New International Version17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. For ReflectionThere is no sin in being rich. Neither is poverty a result of sinful behavior. But the growing chasm between the profoundly wealthy and the profoundly poor is deepening. All of the resources in God's creation belong to God. We are the custodians of those resources. It is not God's will that some have overflowing cups while others beg for sips.
This disparity does not call for a Robinhood moment. It is not a matter of stealing from the wealthy to give to the poor. It is about righting an injustice that, if gone untreated, results in chaos and rebellion that threatens all of us.
Equitable distribution is not the same as equal distribution of resources. Ask yourself, in a country as wealthy as we are, how is it that so many do not have enough to eat, access to adequate health care, and even though they work two and three jobs, can not earn enough to ensure their family's survival?
Is this really a question of taking from those who have and giving it to the "undeserving have-nots'? Instead, isn't it a question of being stewards of God's Creation and following Jesus' lead to seek justice and care for the poor? PrayPray and stand up for those who suffer from injustices, especially those living on the margins of destitution.
