David Dances Before the Ark

2 Samuel 6:1-5
New International Version

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

6 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah[a] in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name,[b] the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark. 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4 with the ark of God on it,[c]and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5 David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,[d] harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums, and cymbals.

For Reflection

The subjection to the Philistines was over, and David, in his first act of care, was carrying the Ark of God to rest in Jerusalem. Transporting the ark was first an act of piety, a testament to David's gratitude to God, who had rescued him and raised him to a victorious king.

The act, however, also had a political purpose. David had strengthened Israel after the civil war but under the rule of Solomon who had leveled oppressive levies on unpaid workmen who were forced to work on his costly buildings. The despotic stupidity of Rehoboam had broken up the tribe into two feeble states which struggled to maintain a meager existence. With the ark in the capital, David hoped that the influence of its religion would unite Israel's people as they came to worship in Jerusalem.

It was the hope of Israel. Isn't it also our hope that this world would be united by respecting God above all else?
