Christmas Overture
The Advent of the Messiah Live in the light of God (Isaiah 2:5) Luke 1:78-79 New International Version78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
Luke 2:32 New International Version 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” For Reflection
Light and darkness are central to the Gospel. Jesus was born in the deepest darkness, literally and figuratively. Imagine a time when the only illumination was a campfire. Imagine the darkness that would surround you. The night is associated with blindness and limited vision. It is a metaphor of how God was understood, unknowable and unseen.
After Jesus, God was knowable. Seeing Jesus was seeing God. This King, the Prince of Peace who will uphold justice is light to those who live in a land of deep darkness.
The star of Bethlehem is the overture for the gospel. From the glory of that guiding star to the radiance which challenged Rome's claim to be the light of the world, to blaze of Gospel witnesses, God's will is done, It sparkles in the present-day darknesses, a halo of hope for all who suffer in the blacknesses of their lives. PrayPraise God for the radiant presence of God. Thank God for the Kingdom. Pray to follow the Way of Jesus so that we can help God establish peace and justice for all people.
