John 20:19-23 The Message

To Believe

19-20 Later on that day, the disciples had gathered together, but, fearful of the Jews, had locked all the doors in the house. Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he showed them his hands and side.

20-21 The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were awestruck. Jesus repeated his greeting: “Peace to you. Just as the Father sent me, I send you.”

22-23 Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said. “If you forgive someone’s sins, they’re gone for good. If you don’t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?”

For Reflection

The Disciples met in a locked room.  They were fearful of their fate if an angry mob got hold of them.
Jesus appears before them and bestows Peace. It is the peace of solitude in the face of persecution. Jesus then breaths on the and delivers to each The Holy Spirit. Finally, Jesus ordains them and begins a new world order. Insofar as they reveal God, Jesus equips and commissions the men and women who believe in him. In the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ followers receive nothing less than the fullness of the glorified Son.

Jesus is not appointing the church as his moral watchdog, nor does he commission it to arbitrate people’s assets and liabilities on a heavenly balance sheet. Instead, Jesus sends disciples to free others from sin. To forgive.

Pray

Pray, and let the Holy Spirit guide your life. Pray, for the believers whose discipleship has freed us from dependence on this world instead of God's Kingdom.
