John 5:19-24
New International Version

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all, he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so, the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

For Reflection

The consubstantiality of Father and Son is confirmed. You see the Son; therefore, you see the Father. Alas, God is knowable.

Perplexing though it is, God entrusts all judgment to Jesus. What does "judgment" mean in this context? Calvin suggests, "...when we wish to rise to God, all our senses immediately fail, Christ is placed before our eyes as a lively image of the invisible God. ...God provides for our weakness by showing himself to be near in the person of Christ; but, on the other hand, whenever the inquiry [How do we conduct ourselves in a Godly way?] relates to the government of the world, to our own condition, to the heavenly guardianship of our salvation, let us learn to direct our eyes to Christ alone, as all power is committed to him."

Christ raises us from the dead, He quickens us [bestows life] and leads us to understand the basis for our discernment of good and evil, righteous and sinfulness, so that we may conduct our lives in the image of God as God has intended.

Pray

Pray prayers of praise and thanksgiving for the love God has shown to us.  Be thankful for the gift of Jesus, who leads us in the way of the Kingdom of God.
